New Wave Films Acquire Trio Of Titles Screened At Berlin Film Festival

New Wave Films seek out and release, in the UK, some of the very best world cinema titles. They deserve endless plaudits alone for releasing Bruno Dumont’s Hadewicjh and forthcoming Hors Satan. Not only that they’ve got Cannes Grand Prix winner Once Upon a Time in Anatolia due next month.

The distributor has kept a keen eye on the Berlin Film Festival and purchased the rights to several award-winning titles such as Caesar Must Die (Cesare deve morire), from Italians Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, which won the Golden Bear.

Also picked up for UK distribution were Tabu and The Wall. Below is a description of each film along with a nice comment from New Wave Films.

Caesar Must Die: “Each year the inmates of Rome’s high security Rebibbia prison put on a play. The Tavianis follow the rehearsals and performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, a play where the conspiracies and betrayals echo the past and present lives of the prisoners. The actors become prisoners once again as they are accompanied back to their cells.”

TABU: “a film by Miguel Gomes WINNER OF THE ALFRED BAUER PRIZE for INNOVATION and WINNER OF THE FIPRESCI INTERNATIONAL CRITICS’ PRIZE In his follow-up to OUR BELOVED MONTH OF AUGUST, Miguel Gomes playfully interprets and rearranges events: whilst the first part of his film portrays a society awash in nostalgia, the second part delivers everything it longs for: stirring melodrama, slapstick, and passion.”

THE WALL (Die Wand): “a film by Julian Roman Pölsler WINNER OF THE ECUMENICAL PRIZE – Panorama Martina Gedeck, best known for her performance in THE LIVES OF OTHERS, now stars in THE WALL, a contemporary female Robinson Crusoe story. Based on Marlen Haushofer’s best-selling novel from the 60’s, the film is a highly original exploration of the experience of solitude and survival. Martina Gedeck brings to the role a rare and vivid intensity.”

Pam Engel and Robert Beeson of New Wave Films said:

“We are delighted to have acquired the latest film from the Tavianis with whom we have worked on several occasions in the past starting with their Palme d’Or winner PADRE PADRONE.” We are also very pleased to have acquired two other award winning films from comparatively new voices in world cinema in TABU and THE WALL.”

Stay turned for more on these titles in the coming months. Exciting stuff.
