About

Cinemart was birthed into existence June 2011 and is a place for film lovers, film geeks, film freaks, film anything. Cinema is egalitarian, and, if you think about it, not only a dream world but an alternate universe where all sorts of mad adventures abound. There’s the Mainstream Nebula, the outer reaches of the Horror galaxy, the Planet Experimenta and the Indie/Arthouse solar system. Think of us as a collective Hubble telescope recording our discoveries and impressions on the most beautiful, spellbinding medium there is. Or something like that.

Martyn Conterio – Person in overall charge of things

Martyn holds a deep and abiding passion for horror films, spaghetti westerns, gialli and French flicks. He’s fallen in and out of love with Hollywood down the years but like a callow hearted, needy lover, always lets it back into his life. He worships at the church venerated to St. Martin Scorsese and loves the films of Mario Bava, Powell and Pressburger, Bruno Dumont, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Vincenzo Natali, Claire Denis, Julie Taymor, David Fincher, Francis Ford Coppola, Christopher Nolan, Sergio Leone, François Ozon, Gaspar Noé, and holds a special fondess for the works of William Friedkin. Until quite recently he believed wholeheartedly that Deckard was NOT a replicant but now concedes he is.

As well as striking out into the blogosphere with Cinemart he contributes to top quality publications Little White Lies, Film International, Flux, Scream, Starburst, New Empress, Grolsch Film Works, Scene360.com and contributed to Time Out’s The 100 Best Horror Films Time Out – 100 Best Horror Films. He also co-founded the British Film Bloggers Circle: britishfilmbloggerscircle.

Maureen de Sousa – Contributing Editor

Maureen de Sousa is an editor from Toronto, Canada. When not reading, writing, and eating cheeseburgers or ice cream, she spends a significant amount of time watching films and wanting to teleport to other places like Brooklyn, Rome, and the Tannhauser Gate, where C-beams glitter in the dark. Her favourite films include: Blade Runner, The Warriors, Kung Fu Hustle, Old Boy, His Girl Friday, Holiday, The Thin Man, The Third Man, Girl Shy, American Movie, Encounters at the End of the World, and almost everything by Hitchcock, and Wilder. She also defends her right to enjoy B, C, and Z movies – particularly in the disaster and action genres: Godzilla was among her first loves.

Cheryl Carter – Reviewer

Enjoys metal, tea, cats and Transformers. When not moonlighting as a retail worker, she can be found experiencing music in the live setting and occasionally trying to take interesting photographs of the natural world.

Her favourite films range from the clever (Nosferatu) to the ridiculous (Zoolander).

Sam Inglis – Reviewer

Sam became obsessed with movies after hiding under the seat during the ending of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (he was 8). He has been writing about cinema on the internet for twelve years, and now runs 24 Frames Per Second as well as writing regular and guest pieces for a number of other websites. While he loves films of all kinds, Sam has a particular interest in the horror genre and in controversial and censored cinema. His favourite films include Badlands, Fucking Amal and The Princess Bride (yes, really).

Laura Ivins-Hulley – Contributing Editor

On the verge of being a confirmed academic, meaning I’m still writing my dissertation on Jan Švankmajer. I also like to make movies and teach others about them.

Stop animation is a particular love, but surrealism is nice, too. I guess that’s why I’m writing about Švankmajer.
