Dark Shadows (dir: Tim Burton)
I haven’t really enjoyed un film de Tim Burton since Sleepy Hollow. That was in 1999. But there’s something about Dark Shadows that looks fun. Based on a rather weird television soap opera that started as a mystery thriller then suddenly started getting supernatural for no apparent reason other than the writers were probably bored, the show became something of a cult gem. Johnny Depp has professed his obsession with the character Barnabas Collins, a vampire woken from a centuries-long slumber to find himself in the 1970s. The trailer looks good fun and there’s hope the movie is too. I may go back to my ‘What’s the big deal about Tim Burton?’ if the picture disappoints but for now I’m well and truly intrigued. I’ll be honest, it also helps Eva Green co-stars as a sexy witch.

Beloved (dir: Christophe Honoré)
Christophe Honoré is a truly great director. What do I mean by that? Well he made one of my all-time favourite films, the musical Les Chansons d’Amour, and he’s returned to the format the French hate again for his latest picture, Beloved (AKA Les bien-aimés) starring icon Catherine Denueve and her daughter Chiara Mastroianni. Alex Beaupain also returns to provide the score (if you haven’t got the soundtrack to Les Chansons d’Amour then you must). If that hasn’t enticed you yet then the addition of Honore regular Louis Garrel and Ludivine Sagnier will surely do it? Want another incentive? Okay then… Milos Forman, yes the famous director, also stars in the film… magnifique!

[•REC] Genesis
Muy bien! There’s another [•REC] film on the near horizon, all bloodied up and wanting to eat human flesh, no doubt. The films, with their pretend ‘as it’s happening’ news feed aesthetic really gave the zombie genre so much needed welly. That, and the original premise, was killer. There’s an apartment building in Barcelona that is the centre of a zombie outbreak caused by demons … no, really. Apparently Paco Plaza’s third outing ditches the live camera styling pretty early on (it was getting boring, to be honest). Genre fans were intrigued by the one-sheets and foyer stands depicting a bride clutching a chainsaw bathed in blood. It’s a nice day for a blood-soaked wedding, Billy Idol never sang…
