Everybody loved Ruben Fleischer’s Zombieland but not everybody loved his follow up movie, 30 Minutes or Less. Will Gangster Squad be in the Zombieland camp or the other? The 1940s-set crime thriller looks very much a change of direction into more serious territory and the cast assembled is pretty darn good.
The trailer for the flick has landed online and now you can watch it below because that’s the way it goes. Starring in Gangster Squad is … Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Giovanni Ribisi.
No UK release date is pegged yet but expect this around September or October time. Judging from this trailer, which admittedly isn’t the best thing to do, what we get here is a film which reminded this writer of L.A. Confidential and The Untouchables … let’s hope it isn’t like Mulholland Falls.
Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.
