Artistic merit and success are not genetic unfortunately – just ask Jennifer Lynch (even though her feature, Surveillance, does have some fans). But will a new filmmaker named Brandon Cronenberg buck the trend? The son of Dave Deprave screened his film at Cannes and it didn’t go down that well. His debut is a creepy body horror thriller called Antiviral and now there’s a trailer courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.
It’s got to be said the plot of Antiviral feels very much like Cronenberg Snr., in tone. Will Junior bring something new to the table? Starring in the movie is Caleb Landry Jones, Malcolm McDowell, Sarah Gadon and Douglas Smith star. I always thought Vincenzo Natali would be the ‘new Cronenberg’, but it might well be Brandon Cronenberg is the new Cronenberg. Who’d have thunk it?
There’s no release date yet for the UK and expect this one to do the festival circuit, maybe even London. It’s definitely playing Toronto next month. Stay alert for more news on this. There’s also a poster to view after the trailer. We’re good like that.
