At the BFI Southbank’s bar tonight (16th Feb), the BFBC (British Film Bloggers Circle) Awards were announced. Our nominations were listed a week or so ago. So without further ado, here’s this year’s winners:

Marion Cotillard – Rust and Bone (not The Dark Knight Rises!)

Best Actor
Joaquin Phoenix & Daniel Day-Lewis share the distinction (ironic, really)

Best British Film

What is the big deal with Zero Dark Thirty? It’s really average – Bigelow and Boal
just re-create the real life story whose outcome we all know –
accurately or not, I don’t know, but this matters less than the fact
it’s without any depth, emotional resonance or even an attempt to say
something. The characters have no backgrounds and no depth and you don’t
care about them. I was so bored I just watched the clock and waited for
it to be over, which proves that having a plot isn’t enough for a movie
not be boring – it has to make you care, and I found myself wondering
why I should care. The only explanation I see for its reputation is that
it’s an attention grabber because of its subject matter, and judging by
this year’s Oscar lineup, Americans are obsessed with any movie that
deals with Important Moments from their history, regardless of its
quality. But why are the British film bloggers obsessed with this movie,
too?
